Ronaldo brace fires United win
Thursday, October 25, 2007
Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice to put Manchester United within touching distance of the European Champions League's first knock-out round with a 4-2 away win over spirited Dynamo Kiev.
The Portuguese star outshone team-mate Wayne Rooney, who celebrated turning 22 this week with a goal at Kiev's NSC Olympiyskiy Stadium.
United's English rivals Arsenal gave manager Arsene Wenger the perfect birthday present as they produced a sensational display to thrash Slavia Prague 7-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
In Kiev, defender Rio Ferdinand had given United an early lead on 10 minutes, before Rooney snatched the second on 18 minutes to add to the goal he scored against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Ronaldo struck either side of half-time.
"We are very pleased with the result," said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
"It gives us nine points from three wins and puts us in a strong position.
"With the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, Giggs and Terez all back in form and fit, we have plenty of ammunition in attack for the next few games."
