Arsenal move top as United slip Sunday, February 03, 2008
Arsenal reclaimed the Premier League summit with a 3-1 win over Manchester City as rivals Manchester United were held 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspurs on Saturday.
Emmanuel Adebayor's double and an acrobatic overhead kick from Eduardo da Silva put an end to City's one hundred percent home records this season and earned Gunners a two points lead on the table.
The reigning champions, who could have gone top with a win, are second in 58 points after they were forced to grab an injury-time draw at White Hart Lane.
Dimitar Berbatov put Spurs ahead from close range on 21 minutes after Aaron Lennon's cross was parried away by Edwin van der Sar. Robbie Keane then missed a clear-cut chance and was made to pay when Carlos Tevez volleyed in a Nani corner four minutes into stoppage time.
Third-placed Chelsea sit six points adrift of the leaders after levelling 1-1 at Portsmouth while Everton are 10 points further back in fourth after a goaless draw at Blackburn.
Liverpool moved to within one place of Everton as they rebounded from recent league frustration to sweep aside Sunderland3-0 at Anfield.
At the other end of table, Derby left it late to earn a 1-1 draw against fellow strugglers Birmingham at St Andrews and Wigan moved out of the drop zone by defeating a lacklustre West Ham United 1-0 at home.
Reading lost their sixth league match in a row, 2-0 at home to Bolton Wanderers, approaching the brink of relegation zone.
Emmanuel Adebayor wasted little time in putting Arsenal in front after nine minutes and Eduardo's acrobatic turn and volley made it 2-0 from Adebayor's clever header after another glorious move on 26 minutes.
City went back into fight two minutes later when Gelson Fernandes cashed in on Gael Clichy mistake, but Arsenal secured the victory with two minutes from time as a swift counter-back saw Adebayor stroked home his 18th league goal of the season.
