A 33rd minute header from Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo gave Portugal a 1-0 win over Estonia.

The result was enough to keep them three points clear at the top of World Cup qualifying Group Three.

Ronaldo headed home a cross from Luis Figo, back for his second match after his international retirement and extending his record number of appearances to 112 games.

But he was outshone in that department by Estonian captain Martin Reim, who was making his 143rd appearance for his country - matching the record set by Marko Kristal in April.

Reim is now among the Top 10 most capped players in history.

He was not able to mark the occasion with a victory, but Estonian keeper Artur Kotenko, earned his keep with some excellent saves and reinforced his reputation as a replacement for Mart Poom.

The result ended any lingering hopes Estonia may have had of finishing second in the group and going into the playoffs as they slipped back to fifth with just 11 points from their nine matches.

With the completion of all three matches played on Wednesday, Portugal lead the standings with 20 points from eight matches.

Slovakia, 4-0 winners in Luxembourg, are second with 17 points while Russia, who did not play, have 14 points.

Latvia, who beat Liechtenstein 1-0, are fourth on 13 points.
