Ronaldo will stay - Ferdinand
Tuesday, June 10, 2008
Rio Ferdinand is confident Cristiano Ronaldo will still be a Manchester United player next season.
Ronaldo has hinted he would like to join Real Madrid after Euro 2008 if the Spanish champions deliver on their reported promise to pay him 300,000 pounds a week and give United a world record transfer fee.
But, despite Ronaldo's refusal to rule out a move to Spain, United defender Ferdinand believes the Portugal winger's future remains at Old Trafford.
Speaking to Sky Sports News during a charity visit to Nigeria, he insisted he wasn't worried about losing the PFA Player of the Year.
"Not really - I don't think Manchester United are noted as a selling club really," he said.
"I saw an interview with the manager the other day and I think we only really sell players that we want to sell and I wouldn't put Ronnie in that category.
"At the end of the day he is a Man United player and long may that continue."
Ferdinand concedes Champions League and Premier League winners United may not be so successful if Ronaldo does move to the Bernabeu stadium.
"I want him to be my team-mate because he is a fantastic footballer and that means we are going to be that bit more successful if we have got him in our ranks," he said.
"As I said, I would love him to stay but I am not the man who makes the decisions at the club.
"So we are just like the fans really, we read the papers and listen to the TV and stuff and we'll watch this space but I'm sure he will be a Man United player next season."
