Ronaldo not serious about Real - Vidic Sunday, November 09, 2008
Nemanja Vidic has claimed that team mate Cristiano Ronaldo did not want to leave Manchester United for Real Madrid in the summer, despite reports to the contrary.
The Portuguese winger’s on-off move from Manchester to Madrid filled pages of newspapers all summer long, as it clearly seemed that Cristiano Ronaldo was longing to make the move.
However, United's number seven eventually opted to stay at Old Trafford. Now teammate Nemanja Vidic claims that Ronaldo did not want to leave the club and go to Real.
According to The Sun, the Serbian said: “Cristiano didn’t really want to leave for Real Madrid in the summer, even though the media went crazy with the story.”
The centerback also hinted that the United boss Sir Alex Ferguson may have played some part in Ronaldo’s decision to stay.
“Fergie has a special relationship with all of his players and Cristiano is no different,” explained Vidic, before adding, “He will be a massive player for us this year.”
Ronaldo missed the start of the season through injury, but now appears to be returning to something like his best form. Vidic expects him to reach the heights of last season.
“Cristiano was injured at the beginning of the season and has not reached his best yet,” said the defender, “But he’s getting there and I’m sure he will deliver for the team like he did last season.”
Ronaldo has four goals in his last two Premier League games and Vidic admitted it was a relief to have him still at Old Trafford. He concluded: “The club expects a lot from him but he’s a good guy, a great player and I’m very happy he is still part of the side.”
