Ronaldo relishes home debut
Monday, July 27, 2009

Cristiano Ronaldo has turned his attention to getting ready for the new season after making his first home appearance for Real Madrid.

The Real fans got their first glimpse of the club's new signing as he started Sunday's Peace Cup clash with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad.

Ronaldo's early touches were cheered by the home crowd and the Portuguese winger showed glimpses of the skill that persuaded the Spanish giants to splash out a world-record £80million to prise him from Manchester United.

The closest Ronaldo went to scoring was just before the break when he combined brilliantly with fellow newcomer Karim Benzema before firing in a low left-footed shot that visiting keeper Mabrouk Zaid did well to turn wide. Applauded

Raul gave the hosts a 55th-minute lead, only for Hicham Aboucherouane to level soon after, while Ronaldo was substituted midway through the second half.

"I'm very happy for having made my debut at the Santiago Bernabeu," he said. "The fans have applauded and I've enjoyed it a lot.

"Many new players have come in and we are starting to understand each other. I think it's normal that the work we are doing can't be seen yet."

It was an uninspiring performance from Real as they returned to Spain following their pre-season trip to Ireland, where they beat Shamrock Rovers 1-0.

Al-Ittihad created enough opportunities to claim victory in front of a crowd of around 30,000 at the Bernabeu.

But Ronaldo is confident his new club will be firing on all cylinders come the start of the Primera Division season against Deportivo La Coruna on 30th August.

Tough

"We wanted to win but we've come up against a tough team," Ronaldo added. "But it doesn't matter because we are in pre-season and the most important thing is that we continue getting into shape. I'm happy.

"Now what we have to think about is getting in shape. What happened is normal because we've only been working together for 17 days and the key thing is to work hard to be able to start the league as strong as possible."

Madrid are back in action on Tuesday evening as they host Ecuador's Liga de Quito, who beat Al-Ittihad 3-1 in their opening Peace Cup game.
